Let’s be honest — no one hopes for rain on their wedding day. But if the forecast turns gray, you don’t need to panic. We always build in a rain plan, and Chicago just happens to have some of the most gorgeous indoor and covered photo spots around.
So take a breath, grab a clear umbrella (don’t worry, we bring extras), and know that even a rainy day can lead to the dreamiest, most romantic photos.
Here are our favorite go-to locations for rainy wedding portraits in Chicago — with links, tips, and a few things to keep in mind:
1. Union Station
The dramatic columns and soft natural light here make Union Station a classic, timeless choice. It’s fully covered and perfect for couples who want something elegant and grand.
📸 Photography permit required.
2. Garfield Park Conservatory
This indoor jungle is a lush, light-filled dream. You’ll be surrounded by tropical plants and glowing glass ceilings — it’s hard to believe you’re in Chicago.
💡 Note: it’s beautiful but very humid — pack a little extra setting spray.
📸 Photography permit required.
3. Lincoln Park Conservatory
A bit smaller and more intimate than Garfield, but just as charming. Vintage greenhouses, filtered light, and lots of romantic corners.
📸 Photography permit required.
4. Lyric Opera House (Plaza)
Outside the Lyric Opera building, there’s a gorgeous series of grand arches — and yes, they’re covered! It’s a beautiful downtown option for portraits, even in the rain.
📸 No permit needed if you're shooting outside.
5. Honeycomb Pavilion in Lincoln Park
A hidden gem near the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool. The wooden pavilion is peaceful and architectural with skyline views. It’s open-air, so not ideal in heavy wind, but perfect for light rain or shelter between locations.
📸 Usually no permit required for quick portraits.
6. Chicago Cultural Center
This building is an absolute gem — think mosaic ceilings, marble staircases, and magical window light. A photographer’s dream.
📸 Permit required and limited hours — check ahead.
7. The Drake Hotel
Old-school glamour meets convenience. The covered front entry and vintage interior spots offer great backup options, especially for downtown weddings.
📸 Reach out to hotel staff in advance if you're not staying there.
A few final tips from us:
- 🌧 Light rain is no big deal. In fact, it’s incredibly romantic. Some of our favorite galleries were shot in soft drizzle with umbrellas and genuine snuggles.
- 💄 Hair and makeup? Plan for a quick fix afterward — that’s it.
- 🕒 Build in buffer time. If the weather turns, we can pivot quickly.
- 📸 Permits matter. Some locations (especially conservatories) require a photo permit, so let’s chat about it in advance.
